According to survey results, only 0.55% of the batteries sold in 2001 were recycled. USC is committed to ensuring
that all batteries generated from University operations are disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.

The University of Southern California recognizes its duty as a responsible business and community leader to protect the ecosystem through environmentally sound policies and programs. The University recognizes that in pursuing educational and research objectives opportunities exist to promote use of sustainable resources and discourage wasteful or damaging practices.

Accordingly, the University will:

  • Comply with all environmental regulations and support best practices;

  • Develop and maintain an Environmental Management System program;

  • Heighten awareness and understanding of environmental issues and engender a “Think Globally, Act Locally” philosophy;
  • Reduce total waste generation;
  • Embrace pollutant-reducing practices and technology;
  • Diminish the generation of toxic waste by eliminating unnecessary use of hazardous materials and processes;
  • Encourage recycling and the use of recycled materials;
  • Manage and conserve energy and natural resources efficiently;
  • Strive to continually improve environmental performance; and
  • Communicate environmental performance throughout the University.
