The following policy applies to USC employees who use their personal vehicles for university business:
1. The employee should be paid the standard university mileage rate for their vehicle use. This rate is assumed to cover operating costs, including gas, wear and tear, maintenance, and insurance.
2. The employee is expected to have auto liability insurance as required by law.
3. The employee's personal auto insurance is primary in case of an accident.
4. If the accident expenses exceed the limits of the employee's personal auto policy, coverage will then be provided by USC's auto insurance.
5. It is up to the discretion of the employee's department to reimburse the employee for property damage to their vehicle, or to pay any deductible costs.
6. All employees are covered under workers' compensation should they be injured while on university business.
