| The most common causes of fires in residential buildings are: |

Candles, incense, and other open flames are not allowed on campus.
|
|
| |
|
| Disposal of smoking materials in trash cans often results in fires. Smoking is not allowed in the on-campus residence halls. It is allowed only in designated areas of a few off-campus buildings. |

| |
|
| Many fires have been started by food left unattended on a stove. Please remain in the room and monitor cooking. |
|
| |
|
| Overloaded electrical circuits may heat up and start a fire. Use a high quality power strip with the UL label to plug in computers or other equipment. Never run extension cords under a rug or furniture. |

| |
|
| Halogen lamps are not allowed on campus. Unlike filament lamps, halogens become extremely hot when on and are often responsible for starting fires. |
|
| |
|
| Unfortunately, some fires are started intentionally. Such actions may be grounds for expulsion from the University and criminal prosecution. If you have information regarding someone who may have intentionally started a fire at USC, please call DPS at 213.740.6000. |
