USC FIRE PREVENTION

The most common causes of fires in residential buildings are:

Open Flames
Candles, incense, and other open flames are not allowed on campus.

Smoking
Disposal of smoking materials in trash cans often results in fires. Smoking is not allowed in the on-campus residence halls. It is allowed only in designated areas of a few off-campus buildings.

Cooking
Many fires have been started by food left unattended on a stove. Please remain in the room and monitor cooking.

Electrical
Overloaded electrical circuits may heat up and start a fire. Use a high quality power strip with the UL label to plug in computers or other equipment. Never run extension cords under a rug or furniture.

Halogen Lamps
Halogen lamps are not allowed on campus. Unlike filament lamps, halogens become extremely hot when on and are often responsible for starting fires.

Arson
Unfortunately, some fires are started intentionally. Such actions may be grounds for expulsion from the University and criminal prosecution. If you have information regarding someone who may have intentionally started a fire at USC, please call DPS at 213.740.6000.
