Standing Job
General Recommendations:
- Allow for neutral positioning of head, torso, arms, wrist and legs.
- Perform work only at appropriate heights to prevent twisting and bending of wrist, neck and rolled shoulders.
- 37 and 43 inches, use for precision work.
- 34 and 37 inches, use for light work.
- 28 and 35 inches, use for heavy work.
- Prevent repetition, and alter prolonged awkward posture.
- It is highly recommended to take micro breaks (of 30-sec. - 2 min.) and vision breaks to reduce stress to body (every 20-30 min).
- Prioritize frequently used work tools within user’s comfort zone to reduce reaching and also to evenly dispersed items for bilateral use.
- Be certain to be centered on your task, users should be able to fit their legs in the space provided under the work surface without contacting the support structure. The space should be adequate to permit users to get close to their work surface while allowing freedom of movement.
- Clear out boxes/storage from beneath the workbench to allow for adequate legroom and prevent awkward postures (whenever possible remove drawers from underneath workbench to provide leg room.)
- When standing for extending periods of time, anti-fatigue mats and footrest may reduce joint strain and muscle fatigue.
- Provide task chairs/stools when applicable for proper support/height and utilize the chair to provide needed support.
