  • Carefully plan storage so that items can be safely and easily accessed, and items can be lifted and transported properly.
  • Reduce reaches and stretches by positioning frequently used items at appropriate height.

Use lower shelves in above counter cabinets.

Use a step stool if necessary to reach higher objects.

  • Reduce bending to obtain items on lower shelves by positioning these frequently used items at the proper height, near countertop levels.

Utilize the shoulder level shelves and drawers for your frequently used items.

  • Place frequently used items close to user to allow access to while avoiding reaching over the depth of the countertop.
  • Prioritize your work tools and keep items stored in the area near where you would likely use that item.
  • Use tools and utensils with large built up handles to avoid a tight grip.
  •
  • Use appliances and tools with easily manipulated controls.
  • Use tools made for the task to reduce the exposure to repetitive motions.

For example, use a food processor to chop food rather than repetitively cutting with a knife.

  • Using the proper tools for the task can also reduce the likelihood of cuts and other injuries.
  • Take breaks frequently.  Stretch breaks should occur every 30-45 minutes.
  • If standing for long periods of time frequently weight shift on legs to relieve pressure.

For example stand with one foot up on a foot rest or rail then alternate feet though shift while standing.

  • If standing for long periods of time in the kitchen try to break up the amount of time you are standing by sitting down to perform tasks.
  • Use anti-fatigue mats on floors if standing for long periods of time.
  • Mix up the tasks you are doing to avoid constant repetitive motions, to give your body a break, and allow you to alternate between sitting and standing.
  • Adequate lighting in the kitchen will allow the individual to better see what they are doing and avoid hunching or bending over the work, thus allowing a proper upright posture.
  • Always wipe up spills or messes immediately to avoid possible slips and falls, and allow same movement through the workspace.
  • Always put away sharp tools (knives, blades, etc.) as soon as finished using to avoid cuts.
  • Always use safe handling techniques when handling and cleaning sharp tools.
  • Use safe lifting techniques when transporting items to and from workspace or storage.
