Proper safe lifting techniques are essential to keeping your back healthy.

  • Always size up the load prior to lifting. Visually look at the item to determine size and shape of item for lift. Nudge the item to determine how heavy the item is. Determine if you can lift it by yourself or if you need to get help.
  • Always have a clear path of travel from where you are picking up the item to where you will place the item.  Make sure there are no obstacles that will get in your way while transporting the object.  You should not have to step over or around other items while lifting.
  • Have a firm grip of the object that you are lifting or carrying.
  • Keep the item close to your body.
  • Have good footing on a stable flat surface before and during the lift.
  • Bend your knees and left with your legs rather than back.  Your quadriceps (leg muscles you use while lifting) are much stronger than the muscles of your back.
  • Keep your back straight while lifting. Do not twist from side to side or bend through your back to lift the item.
  • Do not twist. Approaching the item that you are going to lift with a straight and direct path from where you are to where you will take the item will eliminate the need to twist. Take small steps with your feet to turn your position and avoid twisting through your back.
  • Good individual physical condition play an important role in safe lifting. Physical fitness, exercise, stretching, strong core muscles (abdominal and back), and proper posture support a health back.
  • Always push carts or dollies when transporting items.
  • Ask for assistance. When in doubt get help.
