Hazardous Waste Program
Hazardous Wastes are generated by various University operations including lab research, medical clinics, and building operation and maintenance. Hazardous waste generators are responsible for determining if their wastes are hazardous and for labeling and packaging them properly so that wastes are handled in accordance with all regulatory requirements and disposed of in a safe and environmentally sound manner. Hazardous waste generators are in the best position to identify, segregate, and assist EHS hazardous waste technicians in collecting the waste.
Specifically, generators have the following responsibilities in regards to hazardous wastes;
-
To accurately identify, segregate, and label wastes
-
To complete waste forms for disponsal if applied
-
To notify EHS for a timely pick-up service
-
To perform frequent visual inspections on waste containers and areas
Care must be taken to ensure the following main waste streams are not mixed because each waste stream is disposed of in a different manner.
Chemical Waste
Biological/Medical Waste
Radioactive Waste
