1.0         PURPOSE

The purpose of this program is to inform the university community of the existing resources and guidelines regarding medical and first aid on campus.

2.0         APPLICABILITY AND SCOPE

The University of Southern California is dedicated to the protection of its employees from on-the-job injuries and illnesses. However, when injuries or illnesses do occur, we are prepared to immediately respond to the needs of the injured or ill.

3.0         APPLICABLE REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS

California:  Title 8, Section 3400 - Medical Services and First Aid.

  • Provide the location, nature of injury or illness, and the victim’s current condition. Appropriate medical assistance will be dispatched immediately.
  • If possible, provide information about the age and sex of the victim, and any known medical history.
  • Stay with the victim. Do not move the victim unless he/she or you are in immediate danger of further injury.
  • If the injured person is a university employee, the supervisor must notify Worker’s Compensation at 213-740-6205.  Supervisors must investigate the incident and submit a “Supervisor’s Report of Injury Form” to Worker’s Compensation within 24 hours of the incident (within 8 hours, for severe injuries).
  • EH&S should be notified whenever an accident investigation requires technical expertise beyond that available in the department, and in many cases may conduct a follow-up investigation. Contact Worker’s compensation at 213-740-6205, or access their web page at: http://capsnet.usc.edu/WC/index.cfm for access to procedures and reporting forms.

  • Health Center physicians can also recommend the type and quantity of supplies for your work area.

8.0         EMERGENCY EYEWASHES AND SHOWERS

Where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body shall be provided within the laboratory or work area for immediate emergency use.

They must:

  • Be in accessible locations that require no more than 10 seconds to reach and cannot require the injured person to go through two doors, locked doors, or doors requiring more than one motion to open. NOTE: All passageways must be clear of obstacles (including temporarily parked chemical carts).
  • Be clear of any obstruction (i.e., do not hang lab coats or goggles on this equipment or store materials on or around it).
  • Have potable water and must operate as hands-free, continuous flow for at least 15 minutes.
  • Be operated by a rigid pull bar (not a pull-chain).

Eyewash stations and emergency showers are checked monthly by Facilities Management Services (FMS).  Personnel in County buildings are responsible for ensuring monthly checks are completed by county personnel.

Note:  Personal Eye Washes / Bottles are NOT a substitute for plumbed eyewash stations.  Eyewash units must be able to supply a continuous flow of water for a minimum of 15 minutes.
