Future Fuels and Energy Initiative - Provost C. L. Max Nikias established the initiative to build on existing strengths at USC in methanol fuel cells, bacterial fuel cells, petroleum extraction and internal combustion engineering, aiming to reduce global reliance on oil through cross-disciplinary research that reaches beyond the science of alternative fuels to consider the economic, social, environmental and policy conditions necessary for a wholesale move away from fossil fuels.
Green Visions Plan - In 2004, a new partnership between Southern California's state land conservancies and the University of Southern California's Center for Sustainable Cities and GIS Research Laboratory, was forged to create a visionary plan and practical planning tools to promote habitat conservation, wartershed health and recreational open space.
School of Architecture Materials, Systems and Sustainabiliy Program – The mission of the program is to fundamentally improve the quality of the built environment towards long-term-sustainability through research and design methodology from large scale urban systems design to high-performance building structures, sustainable materials and methods of advanced building systems integration.
The Center for Sustainable Cities
- Established in 1998 by a group of USC faculty from engineering, the natural and social sciences, urban planning, and environmental health sciences. A Grant from The National Science Foundation's Integrated Graduate Research Education and Training (IGERT) Program was awarded to research urban environmental sustainability within the Los Angeles region, the nation's second largest urban area and an ideal laboratory.
The Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies - Since the early 1900’s, the Wrigley family took special interest in conservation matters, including the preservation of Catalina Island off the California shore. The family carried that idea forward by assuring the ongoing preservation of the island and forming the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy in order to study the island's habitat, working to undo damage done by imported species, and working toward restoring the island to a more pristine state.
Generous gifts from the Wrigley family also established the USC Wrigley Institute, a state-of-the-art laboratory and teaching facility on the island. The resulting partnership between USC and the Catalina Conservancy has made Catalina Island a model for focus beyond marine biology to a broad range of environmental, and social conservation issues. |
